The Sumner Tunnel shutdown, now in its 10th day, has doubled the commute times for Boston drivers, according to new data from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.”Bumpah to bumpah to bumpah,” one driver said. MassDOT data shows that drivers are spending extra time in traffic as they navigate the shutdown. Heading south from Route 1A to the Ted Williams Tunnel, the average commute time is now about 17 minutes. A month ago, when the tunnel was open, the same journey took commuters just 8 minutes.”If I had a 9 a.m. job to get to in Boston, I’d be late,” one commuter said. “I don’t know how people are making it into work or making it home before 10 o’clock at night.”The situation is similar on other detour routes. The average drive times on Route 1 from Route 16 to the Expressway now sit at 25 minutes to get over the Tobin Bridge. Last month, the same route took about 18 minutes. The best course of action, if possible, is to avoid the routes altogether. The Sumner Tunnel is expected to reopen in three weeks.
