Brandon Aiyuk likely has played his final game as a 49er, and his recent behavior could outright prevent him from joining another NFL team in the future.
An arrest warrant was issued for Aiyuk this offseason for speeding and he also has posted several bizarre videos to his social media accounts, which ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes is pushing once-interested teams away from trying to acquire the wide receiver.
“I think every time he opens his mouth, he damages his standing with other teams and he scares other teams from bringing him into their organization,” Schefter said Tuesday on “The Adam Schefter Podcast.” “He doesn’t realize that. He thinks he’s helping the situation. I don’t believe that to be the case. In speaking with teams, everybody’s saying, ‘What’s wrong with this guy right now?’ It’s unsettling to watch him. It’s scary to see how he’s handling himself. By the way, he’s still a member of the 49ers organization, the team that paid him, and still, he’s saying, ‘Go Commanders,’ which clearly is the team he’d like to go play for.
“I haven’t asked Washington, I’ll have to give them a call, their thoughts on signing Brandon Aiyuk, maybe for all we know, they’re planning on doing that and it’ll get done. But I know, having spoken to them leading up to the draft, they had some questions at that point in time, and I would imagine they still exist.”
Most recently, Aiyuk posted a video to his Instagram story Wednesday, essentially challenging the 49ers to cut him.
“And if I’m crazy or if I’m cappin’, tell them boys to cut me today and I’ll sign with the Commanders tomorrow,” he said. “And we’ll see who’s cappin’.”
Aiyuk’s behavior began after the 49ers voided his contract guarantees last summer.
He has been mostly MIA from the team since, and, again, running into several off-the-field issues.
Schefter continued by predicting how he sees this saga finally ending.
“What I think happens here, I would imagine when the 49ers get back and reconvene for training camp, right around then, I would think they will wind up releasing Brandon Aiyuk,” he said. “Just flat out cutting him. At that point, Brandon Aiyuk will be a free agent and then we will see what type of impact his social media posts have had.”
Only time will tell.
