This move is surprising, as Emberson was one of the better defensemen last season. In 30 games, the former New York Rangers defenseman had one goal and nine assists.
Ceci is a 30-year-old defenseman who will bring experience to the young backend. His play can be inconsistent and sometimes cost a team, but his cap hit of $3.25 is for one more season. He provides a good veteran presence to a Sharks franchise looking to grow their young future.
“Cody is a solid, competitive veteran defenseman who brings a well-rounded skill set to our group,” Sharks GM Mike Grier said. “He’s a strong penalty killer who can also contribute offensively and he brings extensive playoff experience. We’re excited to have him join our organization.”
The Oilers are getting a break as they deal with the St. Louis Blues, giving offer sheets to Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Emberson’s cap hit is $950K, giving the Oilers more cap space and a better chance to match the Blues‘ offers.
