Brett Yormark calls on SEC, Big Ten to do ‘what’s right for college football’

Brett Yormark voiced his strong support again for a new 5+11 College Football Playoff format on Friday at the Big 12 spring meetings in Orlando.

The Big 12 commissioner urged the SEC and Big Ten to go along with the proposal, saying that the 2 conferences that have dominated college football in recent years have a “great responsibility” to follow through on the new format.

There has been strong momentum growing for an expanded Playoff format that would consist of the top 5 conference champions as automatic qualifiers to the Playoff, along with 11 at-large teams. Yormark recently presented the new format when the Power 4 commissioners met in Charlotte.

Yormark didn’t stop at just presenting the new Playoff model. He wants the SEC and Big Ten to do their part, too.

“I think there’s real momentum for 5-11,” Yormark said at the conclusion of the Big 12 meetings via ESPN. “Certainly, the public is voting yes for it, which I think is critically important. Yes, the Big Ten, the SEC are leading the discussions, but with leading those discussions, they have a great responsibility that goes with it, to do what’s right for college football and not to do anything that just benefits two conferences.

“I have a lot of faith in the process, and I think we’ll land in the right place.”

Meanwhile, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey isn’t staying quiet on the whole subject of Playoff expansion, especially when it comes to comments from the Big 12 and ACC.
