The Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan will be one of the key figures at Hispanidad 2025, the largest Spanish-language cultural event in the world, which will take place in Madrid from October 3 to 12.
The artist, with over 100 million records sold and nine Grammy Awards throughout her career, will arrive in the Spanish capital to celebrate her 50 years in the industry with a free concert in Plaza de Colón on October 5 at noon, where she will perform some of her greatest hits such as “Mi tierra” and “Hoy.”
Additionally, Estefan will be in charge of reading the inaugural proclamation on October 3, marking the beginning of an event that will once again bring together artists and audiences from around the world under the theme “All Accents Fit in Madrid.”
The singer has personally invited her followers to join the celebration: “Bring comfortable shoes because we are going to dance,” she expressed in a message shared on her social media.
Estefan’s presence carries not only musical weight but also symbolic significance, representing the strength of the Cuban diaspora and the cultural connection between America and Spain.
Other Cuban artists will have a prominent place in the celebration, such as Eliades Ochoa, a figure from the legendary Buena Vista Social Club, and the iconic Orquesta Aragón, who will contribute the traditional sounds of the Island.
Controversy over the amount Gloria Estefan will charge for her performance
Gloria Estefan’s performance at the event has sparked controversy due to the cost of her booking. According to the Public Procurement Portal of the Community of Madrid, the artist’s concert is budgeted at 484,000 euros, a figure that has drawn criticism from certain sectors.
However, Rocío Albert, the Councilor for Economy, Finance, and Employment, insisted that this is a “very appropriate” expenditure considering what it means to have an international star of Estefan’s caliber.
He also recalled that the program aims to bring Spanish music closer to all audiences and to offer the opportunity to see world-class artists live without the need to purchase a ticket.
The signed contract specifies that the duration of the concert will be about three hours. The Madrid government praises in the justifying report of the agreement the “great ability of Estefan to attract the attention of all audiences due to her international profile and repertoire full of hits.”
In July, the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, referred to Estefan as an example of the spirit of Hispanicity. She stated that he embodies the fusion of talent, joy, and courage that defines Hispanic identity and that Madrid wishes to project during these celebrations.
He highlighted that his life in the “Cuban Miami” symbolizes the quest for freedom and prosperity for many Hispanics in the United States, as well as the dignity of immigrants and the values of liberal democracies.
“Her performance will be one of the most anticipated and meaningful moments of the festival,” she assured.
The Festival of Hispanic Heritage
The event was presented in July by the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who emphasized that Hispanic heritage “is alive and continues to grow” despite attempts to erase or distort our shared cultural legacy.
The leader affirmed that this celebration has established itself as one of the major cultural events of the year on both sides of the Atlantic.
In this fifth edition, Argentina will be the guest of honor.
Madrid will host over 150 activities in iconic spaces such as Plaza de España, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Puente del Rey, and the Plaza de Colón, which will serve as the main venue in place of Puerta de Alcalá.
One of the most anticipated moments will be the Grand Parade on October 5th, which will take place along Gran Vía and this year, for the first time, will feature the participation of the United States—a preview of what will happen in 2026 when the North American country will be the official guest of the event.
The Univision network will broadcast the parade live.
In its previous edition, Hispanidad surpassed 630,000 attendees, a 12% increase from the previous year, and all signs indicate that 2025 could set a new record thanks to the international lineup and the star presence of Gloria Estefan, which will turn Madrid into the epicenter of Spanish culture for 10 days.
