SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – Hispanic students at Broadmoor STEM Academy displayed flags representing their heritage and shared their culture with classmates as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
One student said showing off her heritage felt good. Another student said sharing cultural differences gives a wider range of knowledge and a different perspective.
Students describe adjusting to a new culture
Some Hispanic students said feeling included has not always been easy. A new language and a new culture were among the obstacles they faced.
One student said she did not feel included and felt different from her classmates because she only spoke Spanish while they spoke English.
Yahana Hernandez said she now draws strength from what once made her feel different and shares that with others.
Event organizers said creating a welcoming environment so no one else feels the way Hernandez once did is the goal of the event.
Hernandez said, translated from Spanish, it’s a good way to tell students born and raised in the school’s community to support those who come from a different country and struggle to communicate.
The event took place during Hispanic Heritage Month.
