Jason La Canfora has made a bold prediction ahead of the start of organized team activities (OTAs) for the Denver Broncos.
After the Broncos used a fifth-round pick to select tight end Justin Joly in last month’s NFL draft, La Canfora seemingly believes that veteran tight end Evan Engram is on the hot seat.
“Joly will have a role right away,” La Canfora wrote for Casino.us. “Evan Engram did not work out there last year as a move TE and I suspect he’s not on their roster by the start of training camp.”
This is a very bold prediction from La Canfora after Denver promoted Davis Webb to offensive coordinator this offseason. Webb is one of Engram’s former teammates (and a good friend), and he helped recruit the tight end to the Broncos last year. Now that Webb is calling the plays, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Engram actually more involved in the offense this fall.
Engram did underwhelm in his first season in Denver, though, and the team would save $6.47 million if Engram is released with a post-June 1 designation. Still, we’d be surprised if the Broncos cut the 31-year-old tight end before training camp begins in late July. We’ll see how well (or poorly) La Canfora’s take ages in the coming months.
