After 20 years of incredible work for his program, BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe has officially announced his plans to retire at the end of the year.
While Holmoe has become an icon in the world of sports thanks to his incredible dedication to his Halloween costumes, he’s also led BYU into an incredible era of athletics over the course of his career.
“Holmoe lifted BYU Athletics to new heights during his tenure, leaving an undeniable mark and legacy,” the announcement states. “His tireless work to champion BYU helped lead BYU to join the Big 12 Conference in 2023. His creative football scheduling through an era of independence, making key head coaching hires in multiple sports, being named a NACDA Athletic Director of the Year, and numerous other awards and accomplishments will be long remembered.”
Tom Holmoe was named the AD at BYU in March of 2005, and since taking over the job, BYU has captured 128 conference regular-season championships and postseason championships. More than 300 student-athletes at BYU have earned All-America status during Holmoe’s time with the program, according to the university’s website.
In addition to his impressive success in athletics, Holmoe has gone viral in recent years due to his incredibly intricate Halloween costumes. He’s been seen sporting costumes like Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter), Rafiki (Disney’s The Lion King), Ernesto De La Cruz (Disney’s Coco), The Genie (Disney’s Aladdin), Lord Voldemort (Harry Potter), and many more.
“Holmoe’s retirement comes on the heels of BYU’s celebration of its 100 years of football,” the statement continued. “As a player, coach, and administrator, Holmoe was a part of BYU Football for more than a quarter century, playing and coaching as a graduate assistant alongside his mentor and legendary coach LaVell Edwards. Holmoe will retire on a high note after one of BYU’s most successful football seasons, defeating Colorado in the Alamo Bowl to cap an 11-2 season and finish with a No. 13 final ranking.”
Holmoe will expand on his decision to BYU fans worldwide in a press conference on Wednesday, February 12th, at 10:00 a.m. central.
