Ahead of the 2024 college football season, the Big 12 Conference was labeled America’s most unpredictable and exciting conference. Over the past six weeks, it has absolutely lived up to the hype.
One aspect of the Big 12’s unpredictable nature can be seen in some recent College Football Playoff odds, which have one team tied for the league lead with little to no love in the race for the CFP.
That team is the BYU Cougars, currently ranked 14th in the nation, with an impressive 5-0 overall record. Despite their impressive start to the 2024 season, the team ranks below seven other Big 12 teams with better odds of reaching the playoff.
BYU is currently receiving just a 9.1% chance to reach postseason play and +1000 odds from the Action Network’s recent rankings.
BYU kicked off its season against Southern Illinois on August 31st, which went down as a dominant victory for the Cougars. Then, it stacked one of the most impressive four-game stretches in college football, with wins over No. 25 SMU, Wyoming, No. 18 Kansas State, and Baylor.
BYU’s next batch of games features just one team in the AP Top 25, in-state rival Utah, who checks in at No. 16. The remaining six games all appear to be favorable for BYU with outings against Arizona, Oklahoma State, UCF, Kansas, Arizona State, and Houston.
If BYU can find its way through the always-tricky Big 12 regular season, the argument for the Cougars to make the College Football Playoff will be stronger than ever.
