With Shadd away, Anthony Varrell and GUAP cohost this episode of TDR’s Trade To Black. There’s a lot to unpack in cannabis news, in Florida, and at the Democratic National Convention. We’ll break down some of the latest news from the MSOs themselves, including Sunburn X and Poseidon. We also have a quick interview with Adam Goers at the DNC to chat about cannabis rescheduling updates.
Senator Joe Gruters, who supports Florida’s Amendment 3, has set himself in opposition to Governor Ron DeSantis. Gruters suggests that a public smoking ban is all that is required to counter the concerns that the state of Florida will stink of weed if cannabis becomes recreational. He also says the opposition to Amendment 3 is being “intellectually dishonest” when they claim that the Amendment was poorly worded. Amendment 3 gives legislature the authority to enact legislation and regulations.
There’s a new rumor that rescheduling cannabis from Schedule I to III might happen before the end of September. On Friday, the Marijuana Herald posted an article with an anonymous source that allegedly works for the DEA who has leaked that the DEA is on pace for a final rescheduling announcement “to come prior to October.” The Marijuana Herald claims that this is the same source that informed them in January that the DEA would announce rescheduling before summer.
With the DNC happening this week, rescheduling being completed in time for early voting in the election cycle could be a reality. But will it, or will cannabis reform become a battleground for both parties in November? With the political scene hot for elections, Anthony and GUAP explore the subject of Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance. JD Vance appears concerned more about fentanyl than cannabis, but he appears to conflate the two.
Adam Goers, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs at The Cannabist Company, joins the conversation later in the show straight from the DNC to share any updates on cannabis rescheduling and the vibe going on.
