This car fire comes after multiple vehicles caught fire inside the tunnel ramp that approaches the eastbound side of the Ted Williams Tunnel late Friday afternoon.

The Boston Fire Department said that just after 4 p.m. Friday, firefighters responded to a fire involving three vehicles that were involved in a crash inside the tunnel connection Interstate 93 north with the eastbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike, just before the Ted Williams Tunnel.

A photo of Friday’s incident shared by a WCVB Channel 5 viewer showed at least one vehicle engulfed in flames with smoke billowing to the roof of the tunnel ramp.

State police said several people got out of their vehicles and fled, which led to additional cars catching fire.

“We heard a bunch of loud bangs,” Shaunna Lai, who was traveling to Logan Airport, said. “Next thing we know, we see … people running toward us out of their cars and saying, ‘Get out, get out of here, get out of here’ screaming.”

Lai said she and her family got out of the tunnel and then saw more people running out before the tunnel became dark from what appeared to be smoke.

Video from Sky 5 showed smoke coming from one of the ventilation buildings near Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood.

Deputy Fire Chief James Greene said six people were inside the vehicles that caught fire, and three of them were transported to Boston area hospitals.

The Boston Fire Department shared several photos from inside the tunnel after the blaze, showing severe fire damage to three vehicles.

“They were able to quickly extinguish two of the cars,” the fire department said on social media. “The other car was a hybrid which took longer to extinguish.”

“The companies did a great job to get access to from both ends of the tunnel to get water and extinguish the fire,” Greene said.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation closed the two off-ramps from I-93 north to I-90 east to allow inspectors to evaluate the pavement and other roadway assets to see if repairs were needed.

The ramps reopened to traffic around 9 p.m. on Friday.
