Description

This special event includes two parts—a panel discussion exploring what it takes to make AI serve the public good, followed by a conversation with astronaut Reid Wiseman, commander of NASA’s Artemis II mission.

Next Conversations: A.I. & Governance: Who Governs the Machine?

Rules, Responsibilities and the Public Good

150 years ago, Johns Hopkins was founded on the premise that rigorously pursued and freely shared knowledge can improve the human condition. Today, AI systems absorb, reproduce, and act on that knowledge at unprecedented scale, presenting both remarkable opportunities and serious challenges.

Join scholars, policymakers, technologists, and journalists as they grapple with one of the defining questions of our time and explore what it takes to make AI serve the public good, the costs to society when it fails to do so, and the responsibilities the research university has in shaping AI governance and ethics.

Panelists
+ Stuart Russell: Director, Center for Human-Compatible AI, and professor at UC Berkeley
+ Dean Ball: Head of Strategic Futures, OpenAI, and author of Hyperdimensional
+ Gillian Hadfield: Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of AI Alignment and Governance, Johns Hopkins University
+ Eugene Scott: Award-winning journalist and SNF Agora Institute visiting fellow (moderator)

Exploration and Discovery in Space: A Fireside Chat with NASA Astronaut Reid Wiseman

Astronaut Reid Wiseman took us around the moon and back. Join the Hopkins alum and Baltimore native for an intimate conversation about commanding NASA’s Artemis II mission, what it took to lead the most ambitious lunar mission in half a century, and what’s next for America’s space program.
