Outfielder Bradlee Beesley was promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Iowa.
The Cubs signed right-handed pitcher Nico Zeglin and assigned him to Low-A Myrtle Beach. Zeglin had been pitching out of the Mexican League and had pitched collegiately for Gonzaga and Long Beach State.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were swept in a doubleheader by the Buffalo Bison (Blue Jays), 5-3 and 10-3.
Julio Teheran started game one and got the loss after he gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits over 3.1 innings. Teheran walked two and struck out three.
Shortstop Luis Vazquez went 2 for 2 with a double and a walk in game one. He scored one run.
Center fielder Darius Hill was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.
Catcher Ali Sánchez had a two-run double in the second inning. He was 1 for 3.
Daniel Palencia took the mound to start game two and took the loss after he surrendered two runs, one earned, on two hits over 2.2 innings. One of the hits was a solo home run. On the positive side, Palencia struck out six and walked nobody.
Edwin Escobar got rocked for five runs in one inning and Cam Sanders gave up three runs on one inning, including five walks.
Porter Hodge tossed another 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, although the game was long over by the time that happened. He entered the game with the bases-loaded and two outs in the fifth inning and got a strikeout to end the threat. Hodge gave up no hits, but he did walk two and struck out two.
There were just four hits for the I-Cubs in game two. Catcher Curt Casali was 1 for 2 with a walk and an RBI single.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies got left on the launchpad by the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 6-3.
The game was scoreless before starter Matthew Thompson gave up a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Thompson’s final line was three runs on just two hits over five innings. Thompson walked five and struck out five.
Cayne Ueckert allowed three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, including a two-run home run, and took the loss. Ueckert’s final line was three runs on two hits and a walk over one inning. Ueckert struck out one.
First baseman Haydn McGeary connected for his second home run of the year with a man on in the sixth inning. McGeary went 2 for 4 with a double and the home run.
DH Moises Ballesteros was 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the sixth. He scored on McGeary’s home run.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs convicted the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals), 6-0.
Starter Brody McCullough threw four innings and allowed just two hits. He walked one and struck out four.
The win went to Sam Armstrong because McCollough didn’t go five innings. Armstrong pitched 4.2 innings and surrendered just one hit. He walked three and struck out six.
South Bend pounced on Quad Cities for five runs in the first inning and then let their pitching do the rest. The big blow in the first was a two-run home run by first baseman Jonathon Long. Long was 1 for 3.
Shortstop Jefferson Rojas improved his hitting streak to 12 by going 2 for 4. Both singles drove in a run, so he had two RBI this evening. Rojas scored once.
Second baseman Reviaj Garcia was 2 for 3.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans coughed up a furball against the Lynchburg Hillcats (Guardians), 3-0.
Luis Rujano started and took the loss after getting touched for two runs, one earned, on five hits over four innings. Rujano struck out three and walked one.
Erian Rodriguez pitched three scoreless innings of relief. He allowed three hits, but he walked no one and struck out three.
The Pelicans had just two hits, both singles. Third baseman Christopher Paciolla broke up a no-hitter with a single in the eighth inning.
Shortstop Cristian Hernandez went 0 for 3, snapping his 12-game hitting streak.
