AP today announced that Chris Megerian has been appointed U.S. politics editor, where he will oversee The Associated Press’ coverage of the 2026 midterm and 2028 presidential elections.

In this role, Chris will coordinate political coverage across teams and formats in Washington, working closely with AP Elections, U.S. News and many others to produce distinctive and dynamic stories about candidates, campaigns, elections and much more.
In his current role as a reporter on our White House team, Chris has been a frequent collaborator with the national politics team on a variety of stories during both the Biden and Trump administrations, including the 2024presidential elections.
Chris also has been a leader in our digital storytelling efforts and played key roles in some of the biggest stories over the past several years, most recently distinguishing himself with reporting on the effect of the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency.Prior to joining the AP, Chris worked at the Los Angeles Times where he was a White House reporter and a politics reporter in Sacramento. He started his career in Trenton, N.J., as a state government reporter for The Star-Ledger and is a graduate of Emory University.
