SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The Conference Center for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will fully close to the public beginning March 30, as the Church prepares for a Salt Lake Temple celebration in 2027.

During the closure, which lasts until March 1, 2027, the Conference Center will only be open during major events – such as general conference weekend in April and October, the Tabernacle Choir Christmas concerts, and Luz de las Naciones.

Other events, including meetings, trainings and social functions, have been suspended, Church officials said.

“This operational pause is essential to allow project teams to execute a significantly expanded scope of work and ensure the facility is fully prepared to support the elevated guest experience planned for 2027,” Church officials said in a statement. Crews will work on exhibit development and infrastructure upgrades during the length of the closure.

The Conference Center closure comes as a renovation project on the Salt Lake Temple and the surrounding Temple Square begins to wrap up.

Earlier this year, construction crews began removing the scaffolding from portions of the Salt Lake Temple exterior. Meanwhile, crews on the inside continue to complete the finishing touches with new additions such as chandeliers, carpet and pews.

Renovations on the temple, which was originally completed in 1893, began in December 2019. The extensive upgrades included a new foundation capable of absorbing up to a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, heated sidewalks, new art installations and redesigned garden areas.

The project was originally slated to finish in 2024, but experienced several delays over the years. Church officials did not specify what challenges the renovations faced.

Full renovations on Temple Square are anticipated to wrap up by the end of 2026, ahead of a public open house and celebration from April 2027 to October 2027.
