LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — On Wednesday, the City of Las Vegas recognized one of the most influential Latino organizations in the state – officials declared it Latin Chamber of Commerce Day in honor of the group’s nearly 50-year legacy.
For nearly five decades, the Latin Chamber of Commerce has empowered Latino-owned businesses in Southern Nevada.
“To get that award in front of the man who founded it, who had to kick doors so that now I can walk into the doors and get to a table,” said Peter Guzman, president of the Latin Chamber of Commerce.
That man is Otto Merida – the chamber’s founder who says he never imagined the impact the organization would have when he started it back in the 70s.
“We are always very, very proud, to be able to see my legacy in all of things that we see now here, it’s something that we are very proud of,” Merida said.
Both Guzman and Merida said the chamber’s mission remains the same – to uplift Latino families and businesses for generations to come.
“What I hope for the next 50 years to the Latin chamber is continue to push a dignified life for all Latinos, for all immigrants, to help them reach the dream, the American dream,” Guzman said.
“This was more than what I expected and we are very proud, 50 years is 50 years,” Merida said.
The Latin Chamber of Commerce now represents more than 1,500 members and continues to advocate for Latino owned businesses across Nevada.
