SAN ANTONIO – On this day with an excessive heat warning, there were several people cooling off, taking to the waters at pools and area lakes. So many people are trying to beat the heat this Memorial Day weekend.

From splashes in the public pools around town, nine-year-old Isaac Gallegos says, “Like, it just feels nice, and cool, and it feels fun.”

He is not alone. Twelve-year-old Monernsat Gonzalez adds, “It was like really hot outside and we really wanted to take a fresh air in the pool and be fresh.”

There was even an Ice cream truck that pulled up right outside the Dellview pool. Gonzalez said, “We wanted to get ice cream so we could cool off, ’cause it’s really hot out here.”

There were plenty of ways to keep cool this Memorial Day weekend.

Several city pools will be open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. this Memorial Day.

But, it wasn’t just the pools that were open for everyone, so many people enjoyed area lakes, like Canyon Lake to cool off as well.

Amy Amman says, “As long as we have a cool spot, we can cool off in the water and we have a shady spot and the other thing it there’s just not as many bugs this year I guess because of the drought last year so that’s been a plus you know.”

She and her husband Corbin were scoping out the spot for Memorial Day, ready to bring the family out for some fun in the sun. Most do not expect it to get too busy, since the water levels aren’t too high.

Still, business owners like Jim Mncnew who owns EL948 and rents out jet skis say he is ready for the crowds and is prepared for the heat too.

“When we put out a rental, we put out we make sure that we throw bottles of water on board whether they’re carrying them or now, we throw extra on board and I jump in and out of the lake on a regular basis to stay cool myself .”

It is a good plan, especially with the hot weather that we are going to have this Memorial Day.

The following locations will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.:

  • Dellview: 507 Basswood Dr, 78213
  • Heritage: 1423 S Ellison Dr, 78245
  • Kingsborough: 350 Felps Blvd, 78221
  • Lady Bird Johnson: 10700 Nacogdoches Rd, 78217
  • Lincoln: 2915 E Commerce St, 78203
  • Roosevelt: 331 Roosevelt Ave, 78210
  • San Pedro Springs: 2200 N Flores St, 78212
  • Spring Time: 6571 Spring Time Dr, 78249
  • Southside Lions: 3100 Hiawatha St, 78210
  • Westwood: 7627 Military Dr. W, 78242
  • Woodlawn Lake: 221 Alexander Ave, 78201

For those interested in lap swimming, the Woodlawn Lake Pool offers lap swim sessions from Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

In addition to the pools, the city’s splash pads are now open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. through October, providing another great way to stay cool.
