The background
The board selected the name Mayfair Elementary School in January, according to previous reporting by Community Impact. Voters approved funding for the new school in the November 2023 bond election.
Mascot nominations opened to the Oak Creek Elementary and Freiheit Elementary School communities from Feb. 14-18. One hundred responses from the community were submitted, with four of them having multiple nominations and the board approving mountain lions.

Vice President Tim Hennessee told Community Impact that selecting a mascot felt like the closing point for the development of the elementary school.
“I’m really excited about it because, again, I am on this side of the district so being a mountain lion, I can’t wait,” Hennessee said.
