The Good Trouble Foundation and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity are honoring the John Lewis National Day of Commemoration.

ATLANTA — Wednesday marks four years since the death of iconic U.S. Congressman and civil rights advocate John Lewis. In Atlanta, the trailblazer’s legacy will be honored with a series of commemorative events.

The Good Trouble Foundation and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity are honoring the John Lewis National Day of Commemoration. This event is part of a broader initiative, with more than 85 events taking place nationwide to honor Lewis’ contributions to civil rights and social justice.

In Atlanta, the commemoration will be held at the John Lewis statue at Rodney Cook Sr. Park starting at 6 p.m. The event will call on Congress to pass several voting laws, continuing Lewis’ lifelong work advocating for equal voting rights.

For those unable to attend in person, organizations encourage them to engage in “good trouble,” a phrase Lewis famously used to describe necessary activism and civil disobedience in the face of injustice.

Lewis, who served as the U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district from 1987 until his passing in 2020, left an indelible mark on the fight for civil rights. His leadership during the Civil Rights Movement and his ongoing advocacy for voting rights continue to inspire generations.

Most recently, in May, a dedication ceremony was held on Wednesday, on what would’ve been Lewis’ 84th birthday, after Atlanta’s Main Post Office was dedicated to honor the icon.
