A mom-and-pop Mexican restaurant launched a soft opening of its second location in San Antonio’s Deco District Friday.

Con Amor Cocina debuted in San Antonio’s Highland Park in 2023, serving heaping platters of home-style cooking, including chile rellenos, gorditas, carne guisada and puffy tacos.

Late last week, the family-owned food hub opened a second spot called Con Amor Cocina y Cantina at 1815 Fredericksburg Rd., a landmark building in the Westside’s historic Deco District — the birthplace of Tex-Mex cuisine, according to Visit San Antonio.

The Southeast Side business, located at 2314 Steves Ave., has featured weekday lunch specials such as enfrijoladas or mole enchiladas for about $9. On weekends, it’s offered a $25 meal that includes a pound of barbacoa, six tortillas, pico de gallo, charro beans and two Big Red sodas.

The new outpost is located in a 88-year-old building that was once a Texaco gas station before it housed Deco Pizzeria from 2011 to 2024 and, most recently, the burger joint Unko Maui’s, which shuttered earlier this year. Deco District is known for its Art Deco architecture and Chicano murals.

The space will feature a larger dining room and patio. It will offer breakfast, lunch, dinner and eventually a full bar.

The owners plan to unveil the bar at a grand opening after the state grants them a liquor license, according to CultureMap. Until then, it will operate as a dry establishment. It will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
