The newest iPhone, the iPhone 16, was recently released from Apple. Selling 9.8 million iPhone 16 Pros and 17.1 million iPhone 16 Pro Max, during their first presale week.

“The tech industry survives, like any other industry by selling US stuff most of the time. Hopefully we need it sometimes we do and of course, with technology, especially something like a smartphone, the more frequently they can get us to buy a device, the better it is for their bottom line,” says technology journalist, Carmi Levy. “There’s this constant pressure to always be using the latest and greatest. You don’t want to miss out on the latest features, and you know this year is no different.”

This years iPhone now has an updated camera with a new ‘action’ button to help zoom and photo taking capabilities, as well as Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities.

“I call it a year of an inflection in technology, because this is the year when artificial intelligence powered hardware is becoming a thing,” Levy continues. “So, tech companies like Apple are drawing a line. If you want to be able to take part in the AI economy, you’re going to need hardware that has the power to take that on.”

With these new technological advancements, we are seeing higher daily screen time usage.

Apps, like TikTok, can gather information from usage and tailor feeds to the user making it easier to spend hours on these apps.

“These tools are designed to serve up more of what they think we want to see and hear and encounter, and because of that, you open up TikTok, thinking you’re going to watch one video, 3 hours later you’re shaking your head wondering where all that time went,” Levy adds. “This technology is very powerful, it’s very pervasive and unfortunately the amount of screen time continues to go up year after year and we’re still grappling with how to deal.”

The conversation continues by talking about the link between new technology and social status, as well as ways to control what your apps are tracking.
