The South Salt Lake City Council discussed a proposed zoning map amendment to rezone city-owned parcels at the corner of 2700 South and Main Street, including the parcel identified around 2650 South Main Street, from Commercial Neighborhood to City Facility to allow formal public parking and site improvements.

Planning staff said the parcels are underdeveloped and sometimes used informally for parking. Staff said rezoning to City Facility would allow the city to manage the site as a public parking area, perform site improvements such as top-coat paving and landscaping, and retain flexibility for future city uses. The staff presentation noted the parcel is city owned and across the street from an existing City Facility zone.

Councilmembers asked staff whether environmental remediation from an earlier Maverik station was complete; staff confirmed that state oversight and remediation were done when the city acquired the property. One councilmember recalled prior discussion about a skateboard park at the site and emphasized that the parking use would be temporary while the city decides longer-term use.

Councilmember Charlotte moved to place the zoning map amendment on unfinished business for the Oct. 29 meeting; Councilmember Clarissa seconded. The motion carried.

The item will return to the planning commission for review and to the council for final action on Oct. 29. Staff said the rezoning is intended as a temporary measure to prevent parcels from staying vacant and to provide short-term public parking and site management.
