FRISCO, Texas — The NFL and the Dallas Cowboys are in the throes of preparing for the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, but that’s not the only business they’re working on finalizing at the moment, as the final touches on free agency moves get some required attention.

The club flew out of the gate to begin legal tampering by trading with the Green Bay Packers to acquire pass rusher Rashan Gary, reuniting him with Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark in the process. They’d follow that move by signing talented, versatile safety Jalen Thompson, doubling down at that position with P.J. Locke — the latter reuniting with Christian Parker in Dallas.

Addressing the cornerback position, they signed Cobie Durant, and then there’s Matt Hennessy, who enters as offensive line depth as Brock Hoffman departs in free agency, having not received a tender from the Cowboys.

In all, through April 13, there have been a total of nine free agency additions from outside of the building, and they’ve now been formally assigned their new jersey numbers to make things truly official ahead of OTAs and minicamp.

Note: Numbers are subject to change, and often do prior to the start of the regular season.

  • 1 – P.J. Locke
  • 2 – Cobie Durant
  • 7 – Rashan Gary
  • 13 – Sam Howell
  • 34 – Jalen Thompson
  • 72 – Matt Hennessy
  • 90 – Tyrus Wheat
  • 91 – Otito Ogbonnia
  • TBD – Derion Kendrick

Locke enters the jersey exited by wide receiver Jalen Tolbert, who was since signed with the Miami Dolphins, and Durant takes over for safety Juanyeh Thomas, who is now with the Indianapolis Colts.

One of the most notable number assignments here belongs to Gary, who was assigned what previously belonged to All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs, prior to the latter being released in 2025; and Tyrus Wheat’s return comes attached to DeMarcus Lawrence’s former number that was worn by Jadeveon Clowney last season.

Again, numbers can and often do change as the summer rolls along, but it’s always interesting to see what the initial assignments are, so check them out above and debate accordingly.
