At just 18 years old, Utah’s Dalton Allred is making a name for himself in the Professional Bull Riders. He competed at the first performance of the Denver Chute-Out at the National Western Stock Show and took the lead with a 91.3-point ride on Double S Bull Company/Cervi’s bull named Dialed In. He will be a bull rider to watch in the second round on Wednesday night. Tuesday night’s event will see a new group of bull riders trying to top Allred’s score. NWSS photo by Ric Andersen

DENVER — The bull riders came to the Denver Chute-Out at the National Western Stock Rodeo ready to ride and with their eye on advancing to the second round of competition.

Monday night saw 45 riders competing in one of the biggest events on the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour. Another 45 will make their first appearance on Tuesday night. Wednesday, the final night of competition will see the best of those 90 getting a second opportunity. Their first and second round scores will be added together to determine who qualifies for the final round and has an opportunity to earn a buckle from the National Western Stock Show.

With only eight rides here on Monday, the field is wide open for Tuesday. Taking the early lead was an 18-year-old from Cleveland, Utah, Dalton Allred. Just two years ago, Allred was the Utah High School Rodeo Association bull riding champion. He had struggled with shoulder injuries and had surgery to get those repaired. After months off and rehabilitation, he is back in a big way.

Allred rode the bull named Dialed In owned by Double S Bull Company/Cervi for 91.3 points. He was one of the last bull riders to compete in the Denver Coliseum and watched as several of his competitors tried to overtake his lead. One of those was the 20-year-old phenom, John Crimber from Decatur, Texas. Crimber who was also successful narrowly missed taking the lead with a 91.1-point score.

Now both of these men will be watching 45 more riders on Tuesday to see where they land in the results from the first round. Competition starts at 7 p.m.
