RTD said Transit Equity Day is observed on Rosa Parks’ birthday and was first celebrated nationally by the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2021.

DENVER — Fares will be free on buses and light rail trains on Wednesday in the Denver metro area.

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) said it will offer free fares on Wednesday for “Transit Equity Day” in honor of civil rights leader Rosa Parks.

On Wednesday, customers can ride RTD bus, rail, FlexRide and Access-a-Ride, at no cost throughout the day. Fare will also be waived for Access-on-Demand trips, though customers are responsible for any portion of a trip that exceeds the $20 per-trip subsidy, RTD said.

Transit Equity Day is observed on Parks’ birthday, Feb. 4, and was first celebrated nationally by the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2021, RTD said.

By refusing to give up her seat and move to the back of a segregated bus on Dec. 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks helped galvanize the Civil Rights Movement and launch transit equity.

RTD’s Board of Directors authorized the implementation of this zero-fare day in 2025, and on each Transit Equity Day thereafter, in December.

“Public transportation stands as a cornerstone of equity, connecting individuals to the resources and opportunities that shape their futures. Transit is more than infrastructure – it is a pathway to education, employment, health care, and community engagement that holds room for all,” said General Manager and CEO Debra A. Johnson. “RTD recognizes that mobility is fundamental to dignity and self-determination and removes barriers to access. All people deserve the freedom to pursue their aspirations, contribute to civic life, and navigate their communities with independence.”
