Manish Kumar is leaving his job as the director of Community Planning and Development on Friday.
“From Day One, I approached this role with a clear and time-bound mission: to reorganize CPD, establish the Denver Permitting Office (DPO), and implement foundational reforms that would restore trust and improve service for the people of Denver. That mission is now complete,” Kumar wrote in a LinkedIn announcement of his departure Thursday evening.
The Denver native lasted 13 months on the job, succeeding Laura Aldrete, who served as director for four years. The agency is responsible for city planning, historic preservation and regulating new developments.
Kumar did not respond to multiple requests for comment from BusinessDen.
In the LinkedIn post announcing his departure, Kumar said some of his biggest achievements were cutting permitting times by 33%, reorganizing the department’s leadership structure and creating various new neighborhood plans.
Kumar was also a player in the creation of the new Denver Permitting Office, which kicked off in April. The office – created via an executive order from Mayor Mike Johnston – is tasked with pulling in 280 reviewers and planners from various city departments, expediting the process and improving customer service, with a pledge to review all applications within 180 days.
Before serving in city hall, Kumar worked as a diplomat for USAID, the government’s foreign aid arm. He’s worked stints at both the Regional Transportation District and the Colorado Department of Transportation. Kumar holds degrees in civil engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder and Stanford University.
