Danis thinks Tony
Ferguson’s hopes for the
Global Fight League are futile.
Danis and Ferguson won their respective fights at Misfits
Boxing 22 at the AO Arena in Manchester, England, on Saturday.
Danis was crowned the Misfits MMA light heavyweight champion after
a quick submission win over Warren
Spencer in a modified MMA rules bout. Meanwhile, Ferguson ended
an eight-fight combat sports losing streak with a stoppage win over
influencer Nathanial Bustamanta, aka Salt Papi, to be crowned the
Misfits Boxing Pro middleweight champ.
Ferguson and Danis exchanged greetings after their wins. Danis
revealed that they also had a conversation about the GFL. While
Ferguson suggested that he still had hope of competing for the
organization, Danis advised that they should continue with Misfits
boxing. Danis believes Ferguson’s hopes of the GFL still putting on
shows are delusional.
Could Danis, Ferguson Clash Under Misfits Boxing Banner?
“I was happy for him to get the win,” Danis told MMAFighting.com. “We talked and he said, ‘We
can get the money?’ GLF was offering some crazy money. I said no,
‘We’ll do the Misfits.’ I think he still thinks GFL’s gonna happen.
He’s still… I don’t want to be too mean.”
The GFL made headlines last year by announcing plans for a
team-based MMA promotion with a plethora of
UFC veterans. While the promotion was supposed to debut this
past May, the event never came to fruition. GFL founder Darren Owen
said that his main investor didn’t deliver on his
promise. Ferguson and Danis were initially booked to headline
the second of the GFL’s two canceled events.
While Ferguson was once touted as a potential threat to former UFC
lightweight champ Khabib
Nurmagomedov, his career saw a steep downfall. “El Cucuy”
suffered an eight-fight losing streak, the longest in the
promotion’s history, even forcing Dana White to advise retirement.
Ferguson finally parted ways with the UFC earlier this year and
reportedly signed with the GFL, which is yet to host any
events.
Meanwhile, once Danis rose to fame in the MMA world as the main
jiu-jitsu training partner of Conor
McGregor. “El Jefe” has two previous MMA wins under the
Bellator banner, the last in 2019.
