The Miami Dolphins have made another move to reshape their quarterback room, acquiring Kyle McCord from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round draft pick.

The trade was announced Sunday as Miami searched for a new backup quarterback behind Malik Willis. The Dolphins had recently traded Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, creating an immediate need for another quarterback. McCord now steps into that role as Miami prepares for the 2026 regular season.

McCord enters Miami after an impressive preseason with Green Bay. The former Syracuse standout completed 46 of 70 passes for 446 yards and four touchdowns during the preseason, finishing with a 102.4 passer rating. His performance helped him stand out in a crowded Packers quarterback room and showed that he could be a legitimate NFL backup option.

The Packers originally signed McCord after he spent the 2025 season on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad. Philadelphia selected McCord with the No. 181 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after his record-setting season at Syracuse.

McCord’s college career made him an intriguing developmental prospect. During his lone season at Syracuse, he led the nation with 4,779 passing yards and threw 34 touchdown passes. He finished his college career with 8,555 passing yards and 61 touchdowns while completing 66.2 percent of his passes.

For Miami, the move gives the team another young quarterback with upside while providing additional insurance behind Willis. McCord will have an opportunity to learn within a new offensive system and potentially establish himself as a long-term backup.

For Green Bay, the trade turns a player who was competing for a roster spot into a future draft asset. The Packers will receive a 2028 sixth-round pick in return for McCord.

The trade also represents another interesting chapter in McCord’s young NFL career. After being drafted by Philadelphia, spending time on the Eagles’ practice squad and impressing in Green Bay, McCord now heads to Miami with a chance to prove he belongs in the NFL.

At just 23 years old, McCord still has plenty of time to develop. The Dolphins are betting that his strong preseason was a sign of what’s to come.
