Dolphins’ Jalen Ramsey expected to miss mandatory minicamp

As the Miami Dolphins go well into June still without a resolution to the Jalen Ramsey trade saga, the star cornerback is not expected to be present for the team’s mandatory minicamp this week.

Ramsey is not planning to attend the Dolphins’ three-day minicamp, which begins Tuesday, according to an NFL Network report Sunday afternoon.

The Dolphins and Ramsey mutually agreed to part ways and find a trade for Ramsey in April. The NFL draft came and went later that month with no deal for a pick this year found.

Once that happened, it stood within reason for the Dolphins to wait until June to ship Ramsey, given they would then be in line to save $9.9 million toward the salary cap, instead of losing $8.55 million by trading him before June 1.

But the trade market for Ramsey, a seven-time Pro Bowl and three-time All-Pro selection, has not been very robust. That’s because, at 30 years old, he has a guaranteed salary of $24.2 million. Miami may agree to eat a portion of that to facilitate a deal with another team.

The Dolphins got Ramsey for a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long two years ago. In his two seasons with Miami, Ramsey has 82 tackles, five interceptions and 16 pass deflections.

Ramsey has not been seen at team facilities during voluntary organized team activities over the past two weeks. In minicamp, there are fines associated with missing the mandatory sessions.

According to Spotrac, a player is fined $17,462 for a first absence during minicamp, $34,925 for a second and $52,381 for a third. Teams can also waive fines, but that usually occurs when a new deal with that team is reached.

The Dolphins, without Ramsey, have a young, unproven group of cornerbacks after Kader Kohou, who enters his fourth season. Cam Smith and Storm Duck lead other candidates for a starting role, while others vying for playing time would be Artie Burns, Ethan Bonner, Jason Maitre and Isaiah Johnson.

Miami is expected to sign a veteran free agent cornerback before training camp opens in late July.

The Dolphins are also in trade negotiations involving tight end Jonnu Smith as he looks to earn an increase in pay this season coming off his Pro Bowl campaign in 2024.
