Grand Canyon’s Carter Dooling added another NCAA cut Saturday when the Lopes hosted a last-chance meet prior to the CSCAA National Invitational Championships and NCAA Championships.

The Lopes senior swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 52.37 seconds, just under the NCAA cut of 52.58 seconds.

The Tucson native has been a Lope for all four years of his career.

At the Big West Championships on Feb. 14, Dooling captured the 200-yard breaststroke title in 1 minute, 54.56 seconds. The swim marked a lifetime best for Dooling and earned an NCAA automatic qualifying bid, a new rule to the sport that GCU head coach Steve Schaffer was instrumental in adding.

Dooling, now competing in two events, sends Grand Canyon to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2019, when GCU’s NCAA team of Daniil Antipov, Florent Janin, Asahi Nagahata, Mark Nikolaev and Bogdan Plavin finished the meet with 16 points in Austin, Texas.

The NCAA Championships take place in Atlanta from March 26-29.
