Drone delivery is expanding to parts of Greater Houston, giving some Walmart customers a new way to receive everyday items.
HOUSTON — Walmart and Wing have expanded drone delivery service to parts of Greater Houston, making the region one of the first markets to see the latest rollout.
According to an announcement released Thursday, Walmart and Wing are now offering drone delivery to customers in select Houston-area communities.
Walmart said the service allows customers to order everyday household items, groceries, and over-the-counter medications for delivery by drone, with deliveries taking as little as 30 minutes in some cases. Items available include baby wipes, fresh produce, ground beef, toothpaste, eggs, and other essentials.
“This is our most ambitious year yet as we work with Walmart to deliver to more customers by drone than ever before, and there’s no better place to start than Greater Houston,” said Heather Rivera, chief business officer at Wing. “We’ve seen how much Texans value having a fast, safe way to get what they need from the skies, and we are now serving one of the largest and most dynamic metropolitan areas in the country.”
Where the service is available
The drone delivery option is now available to customers living near five Walmart Supercenter locations in the Greater Houston area:
- Walmart Supercenter #522: 14215 FM 2100 Rd, Crosby
- Walmart Supercenter #768: 1313 N Fry Rd, Katy
- Walmart Supercenter #1040: 15955 FM 529 Rd, Houston
- Walmart Supercenter #3298: 255 FM 518, Kemah
- Walmart Supercenter #4538: 6060 N Fry Rd, Katy
Walmart and Wing said they have already completed hundreds of thousands of drone deliveries at dozens of locations nationwide, including in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex and Atlanta.
How the deliveries work
The companies said Wing’s drones are designed to operate in populated areas, flying at about 150 feet and reaching speeds of up to about 60 mph. Packages weighing up to about 2.5 pounds are lowered to the ground using a tether and winch system, with deliveries placed in a designated area on a customer’s property.
The companies said the Houston-area rollout is part of a broader plan to continue expanding drone delivery to additional Walmart stores across the U.S.
How to order
Customers can check whether they are eligible for the service by visiting wing.com/walmart. Orders for eligible items are placed through the Wing app. Residents outside the current service area can join a waitlist to receive updates when delivery expands.
