La latin community is preparing to celebrate Fiesta Latina Durham on Sunday, August 3, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, in a free event that will combine music, culture, and educational support.

The Fiesta Latina will be held at Durham Central Park (501 Foster St, Durham, NC 27701).

“It’s a party, it’s a celebration. It’s food, it’s music, it’s dancing… to celebrate who we are,” said Mauricio Solano, director of operations at El Centro Hispano, to Enlace Latino NC“We’re an amalgamation of cultures and musical genres, all brought together for four hours in one place, because we’re part of the Durham community.”

The event organized by The Hispanic Center, the City of Durham, Durham Parks and Recreation, and Univision 40, will feature live performances by local groups such as Abakua, featuring tropical and crossover music; Jazzeando, performing salsa and Latin jazz; and the Colombian dance group Takiri, bringing traditional rhythms from the South American country to the stage.

In addition to music and dancing, the traditional school bag distribution will take place as part of the annual “Back to School” activity. More than 300 backpacks with school supplies will be distributed. No registration is required, but children must be present to receive the supplies.

“It’s free. The child arrives and receives their backpack,” Solano explained. “We want them to start the school year with joy and support.”
