Eagles rule out TE Dallas Goedert for Super Bowl rematch versus Chiefs

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert will miss this Sunday’s Super Bowl rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs because of a knee injury.

Goedert, who led the Eagles with seven catches in their season-opening win over the Cowboys, has not practiced this week. The Eagles will start Grant Calcaterra in Goedert’s place.

The injury leaves Jalen Hurts without one of his top pass-catching options, but it’s a familiar position for the Eagles. Goedert missed seven games last season and 15 games since the start of the 2022 season. The Eagles are 13-2 in those 15 games.

The passing game will revolve around top receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, who both took a backseat to Goedert among the target distribution in Week 1. Calcaterra will rise on the depth chart, with Kylen Granson behind him. The Eagles will elevate either Cam Latu or E.J. Jenkins from the practice squad to serve as the team’s third tight end.

“Grant’s done a really good job of stepping in and playing when Dallas hasn’t been able to play these last couple years,” coach Nick Sirianni said recently. “Really excited about Kylen and the things he can do, and I like both of our guys that are on practice squad (and have had) meaningful reps in games — (when) Cam was in San Francisco, and EJ played a lot for us last year and did a really good job on special teams for us.

“I think sometimes that’s rare that you have those guys on the practice squad that have played and have contributed and that you can trust right at the beginning of the season.”

Running back Will Shipley and offensive tackle Cameron Williams are also out for the Eagles. Backup quarterback Tanner McKee is questionable.

Running back Tank Bigsby, who was acquired via trade from Jacksonville this week, is expected to make his Eagles debut in Shipley’s place.

Pro Bowl offensive lineman Landon Dickerson will play even though he exited the season opener with a back injury.
