EAST HALREM, Manhattan (WABC) — It’s once again time for a beloved holiday celebrated in many Latino homes. January 6th is Three Kings Day, or the Epiphany, honoring the biblical story of the Three Wise Men.
In East Harlem, the streets came alive for the annual parade, filled with colorful costumes, floats, animals, and live music. The sheer excitement was undeniable as hundreds gathered to celebrate.
The parade stepped off at 106th Street and Park Avenue around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, making its way toward Third Avenue before heading north to 116th Street. Spectators lined the route to see vibrant puppets, dancers, and of course, the camels.
Three Kings Day marks the official 12th day of Christmas and commemorates the journey of the Three Wise Men who followed the star of Bethlehem to baby Jesus, bringing him gifts. El Museo del Barrio, which works to preserve Latin American culture, hosts the event each year.
“The people make the parade, it’s such a beloved tradition to celebrate the Latino community,” said Pamela Hernandez Hower of El Museo del Barrio. “Every year, more people want to participate. We engage and make it accessible to everyone.”
This year, parade organizers honored several individuals who have contributed to Latin American culture, including legendary musician Eddie Palmieri. His daughter accepted the award on his behalf.
