Kipchoge started the New York City Marathon in the leaders’ pack, keeping within a second or two of the interchangeable leaders for the first half of the race.

After the halfway point, however, the double Olympic champion started to fall back slightly.

As USA’s Hillary Bor broke out from the group with five runners chasing after him, Kipchoge was left at the head of the second fastest group, three seconds behind Bor.

That gap increased substantially over the next five kilometres as Kipchoge now found himself 40 seconds behind the new leader, fellow Kenyan and 2021 New York City Marathon winner Albert Korir, and down to 15th place in the overall ranking.

Kipchoge dropped back another 1.45 minutes by the 35-kilometre mark, and as USA’s Joe Klecker and Colin Bennie overtook him, he fell to 17th place.

The 40-year-old Kenyan would maintain that placement into the last kilometres of the marathon.

While his gap to the leader ultimately increased to more than six minutes, Kipchoge managed to keep Japan’s Fukuda Yudai, who is more than 10 years his junior, at bay and not drop any more ranking spots.

Results of the top finishers at the 2025 New York City Marathon can be viewed here.
