Elkhart, Ind. (WNDU) – A celebration of Hispanic culture is coming to downtown Elkhart this weekend, highlighting a community that makes up more than a quarter of the city’s population.
According to census data, 27% of Elkhart’s population identifies as Hispanic or Latino — more than one out of every four people.
For local business owners, Hispanic culture has become part of everyday life in Elkhart.
Inside Delia Mar Mega Shop, owner Delia Grajeda is building something special.
“I am in love with Elkhart — this is my home — I don’t know how I can explain to you, but here is my passion,” Grajeda said.
Valentina Jaurer, a business owner in Elkhart, said the number of Hispanic businesses has grown.
“It’s growing. At first there was not many Hispanic places, and now we have more places like stores markets, restaurants and everything,” Jaurer said.
That culture will be featured at the Elkhart Hispanic Heritage Festival, which will include food, music, vendors and entertainment.
“The whole economy is supported by Hispanics. It has been for many years,” said Alex Otto, co-director of the Elkhart Hispanic Heritage Festival. “It’s important that we celebrate what’s driving and thriving our economy and our city and our culture.”
Organizers said the goal is not only to celebrate Hispanic culture, but also to share it with all of Elkhart.
“Really, they’ve become a fabric of our community,” Otto said. “We call it a minority piece, but in Elkhart, it’s almost like they’ve become a majority, so important to what make our city unique.”
Back at Delia Mar Mega Shop, that culture is on display every day.
“When I see this place I say, ‘this is my house,’” Grajeda said.
The Hispanic Heritage Festival is Saturday from noon to 10:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Attendees can expect a wide variety of food and market vendors, children’s activities, a live beer garden, displays from community organizations and more.
