Shaping San Antonio’s energy future starts with listening to the people who depend on it every day. As a community-owned utility, CPS Energy relies on direct feedback from residents to help guide long-term decisions about power generation. One of the most important tools for gathering that feedback is our community survey, which asks residents to share what matters most when it comes to reliability, affordability and cleaner energy.
Community feedback has already played a meaningful role in shaping our direction. In a CPS Energy survey conducted in 2022, many residents expressed support for a diverse mix of energy resources. Forty-two percent of respondents said they preferred a blended combination of natural gas and renewable resources such as solar, wind and battery storage. Another 31% said they favored mostly renewable energy.
These perspectives helped guide CPS Energy’s Vision 2027 strategy and continue to inform our work as we look ahead to Vision 2030 and Horizon 2050.
Since the CPS Energy Board of Trustees approved our Vision 2027 generation plan in January 2023, we have made significant strides in strengthening and diversifying the resources that power our city. CPS Energy has added new solar, wind and battery storage to the system while expanding demand-reduction programs through the Sustainable Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP). The utility has also secured additional natural gas capacity to support reliability during periods of high demand.
Together, these efforts help support the City of San Antonio’s Climate Action & Adaptation Plan while ensuring the system remains dependable as the community continues to grow.
But planning for the future is not a one-time process. The energy needs of our city will continue to evolve, technology will advance and community priorities can shift over time. That’s why CPS Energy continues to ask residents for their input.
The community survey provides an opportunity for residents to weigh in on the factors that matter most to them as CPS Energy plans future generation resources. Whether the priority is reliability during extreme weather, maintaining affordable rates, increasing renewable energy or ensuring a balanced portfolio of power sources, community feedback helps guide our path forward.
San Antonio owns its utility, and that means its future energy decisions should reflect the voices of the people it serves.
