The Athletic’s Kelly Iko reported that Cam Whitmore “has been the subject of a number of trade discussions in recent days.”
Whitmore is one of the many promising young players on the Houston Rockets roster, but his path to consistent playing time, or at least the ability to impact the rotation, could be hindered by Kevin Durant’s arrival.
The Rockets have a trio of Whitmore, Reed Sheppard and Jabari Smith that could come off the bench to support Durant and Co., but that might not be the role Whitmore or Smith might want at this stage of their careers.
Whitmore averaged 12.3 points per game in his rookie season and 9.4 points per contest last year.
The 2023 first-round pick could be a nice off-the-bench asset for another team. It may make sense for Houston to swap Whitmore for a veteran bench player or picks to put the franchise in a better position to win with Durant on the roster.
