Mark Black has his hands full.

The city’s Historic and Design Review Commission approved the design for the Mandevilla hotel at 2101 Broadway near Pearl. The $63 million hotel, named after the tropical flower widely grown in South Texas, is expected to have 45 rooms, Black said. He added that there is no set timeline for opening yet, but a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation indicates an estimated completion date of June 2028. Details in state filings are subject to change without notice.

The Mandevilla’s festive design, inspired by San Antonio’s culture, will feature colorful tiles and plenty of greenery. Black Family Hospitality is working with Charleston, S.C.-based Liberatos Architects for the project.

The hotel will include two restaurants and a 9,800-square-foot underground bathhouse with hot spas, cold spas, cold plunges, a large linear spa and a salt float. It also will feature a steam room, cold mist room, massage rooms and a locker room with additional spa amenities.

The family also is developing a Terry Black’s restaurant, dining courtyard and pit house in front of the Alamo Colleges District’s headquarters. Black expects the restaurant to open before the end of the year.

This is the Black family’s first hotel venture. After finding success in the restaurant industry, the family wants to lean into more hospitality projects. Terry Black’s, which started in Austin, also has restaurants in Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco, New Braunfels and Houston.

They also have plans to build hotels in Houston and Austin, as well as a vineyard, winery and hotel on a 64-acre property named Friday Mountain in Driftwood, in northern Hays County.

In the family’s hometown of Lockhart, they are working on a blend of a classic bowling alley, a sushi and cocktail bar, and a taco spot. Additionally, Black Family Hospitality is opening a Terry Black’s and its seafood concept, Opal’s Oysters, in the first quarter of next year in Nashville, Tenn.
