FDNY commissioner Robert Tucker announced his intention to resign his post on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after New York City elected a new mayor.
It’ll be Zohran Mamdani’s job to appoint the next FDNY commissioner after he assumes office on Jan. 1, 2026. Tucker’s resignation will be effective Dec. 19. An interim acting fire commissioner is expected to be named.
Tucker was appointed commissioner in 2024 after Laura Kavanagh, then at the helm, stepped down.
Tucker didn’t elaborate on the reason for his resignation. He thanked Mayor Eric Adams’ administration for the opportunity to serve and called it “the honor of a lifetime.”
“Thank you to Mayor Adams for his trust and confidence in doing this job,” Tucker said in a statement. “It is my intention to resign the office effective Friday, December 19, 2025. Between now and then, I will continue to lead the greatest fire department in the world and will ensure an orderly transition.”
