PEORIA (25News Now) – As the Trump Administration carries out mass deportations nationwide, growing concerns have prompted local organizations to cancel the annual Fiesta en El Rio, which serves thousands of people showcasing the Hispanic culture along the Peoria Riverfront.
To keep the Hispanic community safe within the area, local organizers requested the Peoria Park District to cancel the event this year.
Robert L. Johnson, the president-at-large of Peoria’s Park District’s Board of Trustees, agreed with the local organization concerns, and said he wants to ensure the safety of others.
“Our job is to create an environment for all people in this community to come and recreate and enjoy and attend some of the events that we put on, and be safe,” he said.
Johnson added he does not know for sure if local organizations will try to put on the celebration next year.
