BOSTON —

A fire with heat so intense that it melted a light pole early Wednesday gutted a restaurant in Boston’s Mission Hill.

Firefighters were called at midnight to The Squealing Pig on Smith Street. Crews called a second alarm as they doused the flames.

The restaurant sustained extensive damage, however, the fire was contained to one building.

“The food was great, the drinks were great and it was very friendly,” neighbor Ben Mariorenzi said.

“Just a wonderful little neighborhood pub that’s been here for many years,” neighbor Olga Batyuk said. “I live and work in the neighborhood, and this has been just a great staple, and it’s going to be missed. I hope that they will revive it and bring it back to life.”

Heat from the flames melted the top of a light pole across the street and damaged two vehicles.

No injuries were reported, and the fire remains under investigation.
