Ex-Detroit Tigers starter and journeyman pitcher José Ureña is set to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, marking the third MLB team he’s signed with during the 2025 season.
Ureña — who elected free agency on Monday after being designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays on May 31 — will be in Los Angeles Tuesday night for a game against the New York Mets, according to a report from Jon Heyman.
The Mets were actually Ureña’s, 33, first team this year, signing a minor-league contract in February with the organization. His contract was selected on April 27 and he made one appearance on April 28 before getting DFA’d the next day.
Ureña elected free agency and signed a major-league deal with the Blue Jays, making six appearances, including two starts, racking up a 3.65 ERA in 12 1/3 innings of work.
After clearing waivers for the second time he opted for free agency again and joins an injury-plagued Dodgers pitching staff.
Evan Phillips was just the latest bullpen arm to go down with an injury, Phillips requiring season-ending Tommy John surgery alongside time missed by veterans Kirby Yates and Blake Treinen.
Ureña spent just the 2021 season in the Tigers’ organization, earning a spot in the starting rotation to open the year after signing a one-year, $3.25 million deal.
A rough June followed by a groin strain in July derailed the season and Ureña finished with a 5.81 ERA in 100 2/3 innings.
Stints with five more teams preceded Ureña joining the Mets at the start of the year and the Dominican right-hander hopes to catch on with a World Series favorite in the Dodgers.
