If you followed the FIFA Club World Cup until its conclusion this past weekend, you’re not alone. While the world watched the tournament throughout the summer, a group of FIU students learned firsthand about sports management at a soccer club.

FIU’s College of Business and Escuela Universitaria Real Madrid Universidad Europea have spent the last four years developing a joint MBA in Sports Management. A centerpiece of the program is the annual “Real Madrid Experience,” an immersive opportunity in Madrid that offers FIU students a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of one of the world’s most successful sports organizations.

This year’s group traveled to Spain earlier this summer and gained insight into potential future careers.

“It’s honestly been such an unforgettable experience,” said Valeria Collazo, a student in the program. “From being in Madrid and learning directly from Real Madrid professionals, the program has offered so many unique opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.”

Participants attended masterclasses led by top executives, including Real Madrid legends such as Emilio Butragueño and Roberto Carlos. They also gained insights from current leaders like Gabriel Calderón Pellegrino, director of master coaching and management, and executives from global firms like Arowana Sports.

Students toured iconic venues, including the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, where they celebrated graduation. They also explored innovative technologies and emerging trends in sports, such as the fast-growing padel scene at Ciudad de la Raqueta.

The students learned firsthand about Real Madrid and work in sports management at the club.

The global education didn’t stop in Spain. Back in Miami, students gained access to the city’s thriving professional sports scene. Through partnerships with teams such as the Miami Marlins, Inter Miami CF and the Miami Heat, students engaged in hands-on learning and built valuable industry connections.

“Beyond the world-class classes in the Real Madrid program, we’ve had the chance to tour Inter Miami’s stadium, visit the Kaseya Center with the Miami Heat and experience Marlins Park firsthand,” said Caitlyn Stuart, another MBA student. “You just don’t get those kinds of opportunities with any other program.”

The collaboration combines European tradition with Miami’s fast-paced sports environment to develop a new generation of globally-minded sports executives. Learn more about the program.
