Florida men’s basketball great Al Horford earned an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics on Monday, providing yet another highlight to his 17-year NBA career that includes five All-Star selections. Starting all five games of the series, Horford averaged 7.0 points and 6.2 rebounds in the NBA Finals, including nine points and nine boards in Monday’s clincher.

The 10th Florida alum to claim an NBA title as a player, Horford also joins Corey Brewer and Marreese Speights as Gators to win both an NCAA championship at UF and an NBA title.

Horford, an All-American and two-time All-SEC performer for the Orange and Blue, helped lead the Gators to back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007 before embarking on his NBA career that has seen him score more than 16,000 points in regular season and playoff action.

Three times, Horford’s NBA title hopes ended in the Eastern Conference Finals at the hands of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers – 2015 with Atlanta, 2017 and 2018 with Boston. After stints in Philadelphia and Oklahoma City, Horford returned to the Celtics and broke through the Eastern Conference Finals to make his first NBA Finals appearance in 2022, though Boston came up short against Golden State.

After a Game 7 loss in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, Boston bounced back this season for a dominant 2024 run to the championship, posting a 16-3 record in the playoffs with a sweep in the Eastern Conference Finals vs. Indiana and an NBA Finals win in five games against Dallas to claim the championship.
