With a menu built around fresh, local ingredients and hearty, healthful options, the fare at Cafe Phoenix (1360 G St., Arcata) makes eating well easy. The menu is matched equally by the atmosphere. Tucked along the north end of Arcata’s busy G Street, Cafe Phoenix is part bohemian bungalow, part garden sanctuary. Here, you can enjoy a meal that’s as nourishing as it is delicious.

Cafe Phoenix is beautiful, inside and out. The cozy interior features hand-painted murals, earthy colors and an eclectic charm. But the real magic happens out back. An expansive patio with outdoor seating is nestled among flowers, pollinator-friendly plants and lush greenery. Beyond a gated fence, you’ll see a thriving kitchen garden filled with herbs and fruit, a fitting glimpse into the restaurant’s commitment to fresh, local ingredients. Better yet, Cafe Phoenix is one of the few spots in Arcata where leashed dogs are welcome, making it easy to bring your four-legged brunch companion along for the outing.

Open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Cafe Phoenix has become a favorite destination — a Secret Garden, if you will — for breakfast, brunch and lunch for Humboldtians and visitors alike. Conny Pena, the café’s owner, is hands-on in the kitchen six days a week. After many years as a baker at Wildflower Cafe, a beloved vegetarian joint in Arcata, Pena was ready to realize her own vision. Cafe Phoenix officially opened its doors on the summer solstice in June of 2015. She hoped to accomplish a less than simple task: “Take the thinking out of what is on your plate.” Her goal was to source the restaurant’s menu as locally as possible, staying away from big distributors and partnering with local farmers and producers instead. All fresh herbs and edible flowers, and many of the berries, lemons and the like featured on the menu come right from the kitchen garden. For many years, Cafe Phoenix did not have a paper menu, allowing Pena to run with seasonal specials, making use of what was available and in season. While there is now a reliable menu bringing regulars back again and again for their favorites, Pena still recommends folks check out the specials board — that’s where her vision is truly realized.

The menu, both set and specials, place vegetable-forward cooking front and center. While many restaurants treat vegetarian meals as an obligation, herbivores are anything but an afterthought here. Most (but not all) of the menu is vegetarian, with plentiful vegan and gluten-free options available. Despite its health-conscious philosophy, the food never feels restrictive. The portions are hearty, the flavors are bold. You won’t leave regretting your decisions — even after you’ve polished off an entire breakfast burrito.

Speaking of breakfast burritos, it’s easy to see why this “paper menu” item has earned a loyal following. Packed with herby potatoes, pinto beans, eggs or tofu, and generously topped with house-made cilantro sauce, pico de gallo and cashew sour cream (yes, you read that right), this healthful twist on a classic has folks of all dietary persuasions coming back for more.

The set menu offers plenty of variety and covers the whole spectrum of savory to sweet, light fare to filling. Omelets, scrambles, quesadillas and more satisfy those looking for a more traditional breakfast or brunch. The “Bowls” portion of the menu provides everything from chia pudding topped with fruit to an Asian-inspired Cold Noodle bowl, chock full of veggies and fresh herbs and tossed in a house-made peanut sauce. If you’re just stopping in for a quick bite, the pastry case is stocked with fresh-baked muffins, scones and other treats that pair perfectly with coffee.

Seasonal soups and colorful salads highlight the best local ingredients available, changing throughout the year to reflect what’s fresh. Those craving something more familiar can choose from classic sandwiches like a Reuben, grilled cheese, or BLAT, each available with satisfying vegetarian versions that stay true to the restaurant’s veggie-forward philosophy without sacrificing flavor. They even have a kids’ menu that does not underestimate their desire for tasty healthy meals, instead appropriately portioning them.

And the coffee is worth mentioning. Cafe Phoenix serves a full espresso menu featuring all the classics, along with several milk alternatives for those who prefer dairy-free options. Smoothies are blended fresh to order and make a refreshing addition to any meal. There’s also a thoughtful selection of wellness drinks made with ingredients like turmeric, ginger and other botanicals that support the body’s natural systems, offering a nourishing alternative to your usual morning beverage.

Beyond the daily menu, the cafe occasionally hosts pop-up dinners and live music events that bring people together over good food and good company. Keep an eye on social media for more of these in the future. For special celebrations (or, as I’m reminded, any occasion can be made special), Pena also creates stunning custom cakes adorned with fresh flowers and seasonal fruit, each one looking almost too beautiful to slice into. Pena, who cut her teeth as a baker before becoming a restaurateur, learned to convert most recipes into vegan and gluten-free creations. She describes baking as “her first love.” Interested customers can inquire via Instagram (yes, Pena manages that, too) about ordering one for an upcoming event. All that’s needed are some basic guidelines (chocolate, gluten free, etc.) and you, too, can indulge in a one-of-a-kind specialty cake.

All in all, Cafe Phoenix is a not-so-hidden gem. A reflection of the larger Arcata community’s values and taste, it celebrates fresh, local ingredients, culinary creativity and mindful eating. It asks us to embrace all the things that can grow right here in Humboldt.
