BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Good news for commuters: the Sumner Tunnel has re-opened after a 31-day shutdown for repairs.

The closure had a big impact on commuters and residents.

The Sumner is one of the tunnels connecting downtown Boston with East Boston and Logan Airport.

The work is part of a massive $160 million project that includes working on the tunnel ceiling, roadway, walls, lighting, and additional improvements officials say will increase the tunnel’s safety and climate resiliency.

The needed work has been closing the tunnel down periodically, but this last shutdown was a complete closing since July 5th causing people to make big changes to their lives, like this East Boston resident named Mike. “I had to go all the way back through Chelsea over the Tobin,” he said. “It’s horrible. It went from I’d say 30 minutes to close to an hour.”

Mike added he just wants things to get back to normal.

Officials say there is still work that needs to be done to the tunnel this fall, but that work will be done during periodic weekend closures.

WBZ NewsRadio’s James Rojas (@JamesRojasMMJ) reports.
