The Texan, marked by its large convenience stores, gas stations and logo of a smiling man in a cowboy hat over the Texas state map (with prominent yellow), has 16 active locations across the state, primarily in the south and southeast. Its latest location is in Portland, and a 17th is on the way in College Station.
The gas station also has diesel pumps for tractor trailers, which is something the competitor Buc-ee’s does not offer. Its convenience store includes much of the same kinds of things you’ll find at Buc-ee’s, including snacks and drinks, branded meats and cheeses, sporting goods, clothing and other merchandise.
Across the internet, folks look at The Texan kind of like a Temu Buc-ee’s. “Everything, from the layout to the menu to the snacks to the sign verbiage to the fonts in the store were copycats of Buc-ee’s,” wrote one Reddit user two years ago. “Crazy how ‘The Texan’ owners haven’t been called out for this.”
The Texan is based in Yorktown, a city in DeWitt County about 150 miles southwest of Houston and 80 miles southeast of San Antonio. Pete and Patricia Dlugosch started the company back in 2008 with the first Yorktown store. The couple acquired multiple stores two years later in the Yorktown area before expanding outward in 2014.
The projected location of The Texan is a 12.57-acre site near several hotels, a Whataburger and a Cracker Barrell Old Country Store. The convenience store building is projected to be around 20,000 square feet, per a site plan. There are also expected to be 223 parking spaces for automobiles and 25 spaces for tractor-trailers.
