RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Small business owners across the country are being recognized this week for their role in the national and local economy. In Reno, MidTown has grown to be a small business hot spot.

“Working for yourself is the hardest job you’ll ever do and also very rewarding,” said Hunter Howatt, the owner of Pixels and Ink and Wall Space Gallery.

Howatt set up shop in 2013. “Which is fantastic. It has only grown since we’ve been here.” The company produces fine art prints while showcasing paintings from local artists.

The owner says he relies on paper and ink from foreign countries, and the tariffs are causing trouble. “Those still are typically shipped by China. No matter what we are impacted. Some of those companies sent out emails nationwide saying that prices are going up 25% based on the tariffs that are imposed. We would really love to see those come down immediately so we are not forced to raise the prices that much on the consumer,” said Howatt.

During times of uncertainty, rent remains top of mind. Depending on the size of the property, the average rent is between $1,000 to $5,000 a month.

“The rent is tough down here, but I don’t think I would want to be anywhere else in Reno,” said Triplett. “Just reminding myself of the bigger picture helps me get through the tough times,” said Hope Triplett, the owner of Sierra Belle Boutique.

Triplett is the third owner of Sierra Belle since its establishment in 2016. She says she continues to rebrand her company to enhance the shopping experience for customers. “I really want every person to come into Sierra Belle to feel better when they leave from when they came in. Just creating that great atmosphere where they feel comfortable and confident.”

There are multiple clothing stores in that area, so finding ways to Internet market and build clientele can be a challenge. But Triplett says she enjoys the unity in Midtown. “Every single small business that is down here in MidTown has its own unique vibe to it. We are one of those small businesses and it takes all of us to create this destination that Midtown is becoming.”
