The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has approved grants totaling almost $50,000 for students pursuing post-secondary education and career advancement.

Some $37,000 of the funds will go to the UConn School of Social Work’s Connecticut ¡Adelante! Program, designed for bilingual Spanish-speaking students.

The remaining $12,500 has been awarded to Future Forward CT to help make college accessible for adult learners, including working adults, parents, and first-generation college students.

“We are proud to invest in programs that remove barriers and expand pathways to post-secondary education and career advancement for Latine learners across Greater Hartford,” said Jacquelyn Santiago Nazario, the chair of HFPG’s Latino Endowment Fund.

Connecticut ¡Adelante! offers four specialized English/Spanish bilingual courses at the School of Social Work. In addition, students engage in two 480-hour work placements in community agencies, schools, or Connecticut state agencies working with Latine clients.

The program aims to help scholars strengthen their linguistic and socio-cultural competencies, and prepare for a career serving the mental health needs of Spanish-speaking populations in Connecticut.

HFPG has announced that it will be rebranding in January as the Greater Hartford Gives Foundation.
